Episode 1: You've Got to Dream

Summary

Fresh out of veterinary college in 1937, James Herriot struggles to find work in his Depression-struck home town of Glasgow. Seeking new opportunities, he pursues a position in the remote village of Darrowby working for eccentric local vet Siegfried Farnon, who is less than impressed by his early efforts. However, a difficult calving gives James a chance to prove his worth. Starring Nicholas Ralph, Samuel West and Diana Rigg.

Review

This recent take on James Herriot’s veterinary tales was that rare thing: a TV remake which found immediate favour with viewers, even those who’d loved the original BBC1 series. Tonight’s opening episode attracted over five million viewers when it was first shown back in September 2020, making it Channel 5’s highest-rated show in nearly five years.

And it’s not hard to see why: the Yorkshire scenery is gorgeous and the cast already feels at home, with newcomer Nicholas Ralph, who plays James, holding his own opposite old stager Samuel West, who’s delightfully eccentric as Siegfried (and far less shouty than Robert Hardy). The good news for fans is that filming is now under way on series two.

Here's our preview for the series when it originally aired:

It was only a matter of time before Channel 5’s audience-winning obsession with documentaries about Yorkshire vets and livestock was channelled into bankable drama.

And what better than a reboot of the adored BBC Sunday-night hit based on Yorkshire Dales vet James Herriot’s autobiographical books. It’s charming, too, a genial slice of escapism back to a less complicated time.

There’s pleasure in knowing exactly how this first episode will pan out – of course green young James will get his city clothes muddy on his first job, of course the locals will get him drunk in the pub.

But on the basis that there’s nothing more comfortable and comforting than the familiar, this surely cannot fail...
