Episode 2: Another Farnon?

Summary

Siegfried's younger brother Tristan joins the practice after graduating from Edinburgh veterinary college. James finds himself begrudgingly taking the new arrival with him on his rounds, which leads to a disastrous clash of over how to treat a cow suffering from milk fever. On their return to the practice, they find that Mrs Hall has guessed that Tristan is not being entirely honest about his sudden arrival. Elsewhere, James makes a good impression on a wealthy widow (Diana Rigg) and her beloved Pekingese.

Review

Fans of the original series and James Herriot’s autobiographical books will of course fondly remember wealthy widow Mrs Pumphrey and her pampered, overfed pekinese, Tricki-Woo.
Originally played by Margaretta Scott, the flirty, outrageous grande dame of the Dales passed into Sunday-night television legend in the 1970s and is given new life by Diana Rigg in this charming new reboot.
James (Nicholas Ralph) quickly finds a place in Mrs Pumphrey’s affections and is christened “Uncle Herriot”, even though the vet does his best to convince Mrs P that “chicken, beef wellington, plum duff and cake” are not standard dog food.
We also meet Tristan Farnon (Callum Woodhouse), the louche, lazy, charming brother of practice owner Siegfried (Samuel West). Arriving from his Edinburgh vet school, Tristan is greeted with open arms by housekeeper Mrs Hall (Anna Madeley), but Siegfried isn’t so welcoming…
