Review

The ancient Egyptians loved mummification – it was their best guarantee of eternal life. They showed how it was done on the walls of their tombs and in texts, but they weren’t so forthcoming about where. Now a team of archaeologists, led by Dr Ramadan Hussein, have located what appears to be a sophisticated and previously unknown mummy-making site in Saqqara, near the famous Step Pyramid.

It’s 30m underground. Although it’s unlikely to contain Tut-like treasures, the excitement among the team as they reveal a hidden chamber is palpable. “This is huge,” says Hussein, shining a torch into a chamber that’s been sealed for 2,500 years. And there are surprises in store inside, too.
