Review

Some 30m under the ground at Saqqara, Egyptologist Dr Ramadan Hussein and his team have been excavating a unique funerary complex. There are dozens of mummies in assorted chambers, but now they’ve found a room that contains just one large stone sarcophagus. In the event, thanks to some of the grave goods discovered beside it, they know who’s in there. But can they find out any more? It’s extremely tense as the workmen and engineers argue over how best to lift and remove the five-ton lid. And what damage will opening it cause?

It’s fascinating to explore the lives and deaths of ancient Egyptians, and the prospect of an unopened sarcophagus is always enticing, no matter what’s inside.
