Episode 1: Elephant Valley

Summary

Following a herd of elephants from sunrise to sunset. In a valley full of life, they encounter many colourful characters, but it all changes when the drought comes.

Review

It’s 5am and the sun is rising over the Luangwa River in Zambia. Squirrels hang upside-down on tree trunks for an early-morning stretch and a whorling flock of birds swoops down for a sip of water before flying off in a spectacular aerial ballet.

Charting one day during the brutal dry season, this delightful film lets us in on the animals’ daily lives as the temperature soars, before the sun sets and night falls. We see an elephant calf struggling to drink through his trunk, hyenas playing like puppies in the shade and, possibly most extraordinary, male antelopes tapping the females’ back legs to indicate they’d like to mate.
