Episode 1: Inside Monaco: Playground of the Rich

Summary

Fred Sirieix narrates a documentary giving an insight into the principality on the French Riviera, with access to the royal palace as well as the super-rich and those who serve them. In the first edition, director Michael Waldman explores how this extraordinary country operates, meeting everyone from Prince Albert and his staff to wealthy widow Monika Bacardi, who takes him on a tour in her chauffeur-driven classic Rolls-Royce. He also goes track side with ex-Formula One driver David Coulthard and team owner Eddie Jordan during the Monaco Grand Prix.

Review

One of the oddest nights of my life was spent in a huge venue in Monte Carlo at a reception thrown by Prince Albert, where Cher belted out If I Could Turn Back Time about 12 feet from my table.
Film-maker Michael Waldman manages to capture at least a flavour of the pointless excess of a place where no one pays tax and where people think little of spending 28,000 euros on a bottle of champagne.
He’s a guest of Prince Albert, who is filmed signing documents in his office and then passing them to his assistant. At a big do, guests are given an allotted 15 seconds to shake the hands of the Prince and his wife, Charlene.
