Review

Nine-year-old Shannon Matthews vanished after leaving school on a chilly February day in 2008. With no subsequent sightings there were fears she’d been snatched off the street.

This excellent two-part documentary, which concludes tomorrow, sets out the key elements in an extraordinary story of deception and betrayal, not just of a young and vulnerable child, but of an entire community, the Moorside estate in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, where Shannon, her mum Karen and Karen’s boyfriend Craig Meehan lived.

An enormous police hunt and a big local campaign by neighbours began immediately and national media attention followed. But weeks after Shannon disappeared, suspicion settled on Karen Matthews and her curious, unsettling behaviour.
