Episode 1: Endurance: The Hunt for Shackleton's Ice Ship

Summary

Sir Ernest Shackleton's 1914 expedition to Antarctica is one of the greatest stories of leadership and survival in history. After his ship became trapped in pack ice, Shackleton led 27 men in an epic mission. His battle against the odds and unfailing commitment to bring all his men out alive turned him into an historic figure, whose legend still inspires today. Actor Laurence Fishburne follows a new ground-breaking expedition heading back into the frozen seas to hunt down the last piece of the story - Shackleton's lost ship Endurance.

Review

Anyone interested in Ernest Shackleton and the story of his ill-fated 1914 expedition across Antarctica will relish this documentary about an ambitious recent project to find the wreck of Shackleton’s ship, Endurance.

We hear it described as the “Holy Grail of shipwrecks”, but there’s good reason to believe that the water off Antarctica is so cold, the wreck will be perfectly preserved, 10,000ft below the surface.

A lot of powerful technology and teams of rugged men with beards and walky-talkies are on board the huge ice-breaker that ploughs into the half-frozen Weddell Sea to send down remote vehicles. It’s engrossing watching their efforts and the shots of the vast icy wastes are vividly bleak.
