Episode 1: The Yorkshire Steam Railway: All Aboard

Summary

Piglet has been promoted, but seems to spend more time in his overalls than behind his desk as he grapples with an old American war-horse, the S160 Omaha. Elsewhere on the railway, lovable ticket inspector Bert Blower has a new trainee, and `king of the carriages' Kieran awaits a Flying Scotsman carriage returning to the railway after being vandalised two years earlier. Plus, there are antics from trainee driver Phil and budget-conscious big boss Chris.

Review

It’s summer, and peak season for the North York Moors Railway as this pleasantly undemanding series returns. Passengers queue in the sunshine on Pickering railway station in the heart of the moors awaiting the arrival of a newly reconditioned engine, an American S160 called Omaha.

It’s not universally loved among the railway’s largely volunteer staff, one of whom dismisses all American engines as “intensely nasty machines, and they are not British!” Well, fair enough.

But a Gloucestershire businessman has funded the refurbishment in memory of his dad, and he’s visiting for the day so he can have a trip on board, though, his plans look like they will be stymied by a technical problem.
