Review

Richard Hammond is negotiating the switchbacks of Austria’s scenic Carpathian mountains in a lovely Porsche 356. Are we watching the wrong programme? Fear not, he’s on his way to conduct this week’s lesson in extreme engineering. The surprisingly thin main wall of the mahoosive Kölnbrein hydroelectric dam is 200m high, but holds back some 200 million tonnes of water. It’s become such an attraction that the works office has been turned into a hotel.

As ever, the staff Hammond meets at these huge projects have the patience of saints as he messes about, calmly telling him not to touch anything. But will he overcome his fear of heights to drop over the edge to meet someone at the bottom?
