Episode 2: Super Galaxy Plane

Summary

Review

“It’s like a whale, yawning.” Richard Hammond is awestruck as he watches the nose of the US Air Force’s biggest cargo plane, the C-5M Super Galaxy, open gracefully to receive its payload. This pot-bellied behemoth is the carthorse of the Air Force, weighing some 380 tons fully loaded. But its engines are powerful and its wingspan wide, meaning that take-off and landing are remarkably smooth.

The C-5M is based at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, and Hammond is itching to play his part during a training flight. The crew aren’t taking their chances, though; his role is a strictly look, don’t touch affair. Though he does get to drive an armoured Humvee, and watch a midair manoeuvre that takes his breath away.
