Episode 1: The Celestial Choir

Review

Unlike Midsomer Murders – that other chocolate-box crime drama - nobody is bumped off by a rampant wild boar, an unearthed exercise bike or some other bizarre method of dispatch in this episode. But there’s plenty of well-mannered intrigue and secrecy so the eponymous sleuthing cleric (Mark Williams) can employ his peerless insight into human nature and powers of observation to solve the mystery.

It starts innocently enough. The Kembleford Choristers have reached the finals of the Three Counties choir competition – a massive deal for the village and for a very excited Mrs McCarthy (Sorcha Cusack) – but en route to perform at Worcester, their bus is sabotaged and it becomes clear someone doesn’t want them to perform. Surely a rival choir wouldn’t stoop to such low tricks?
