Review

This is the Channel 5 counterpart to BBC4’s Digging for Britain. It’s cheap-and-very-cheerful archaeology TV, with the cheerfulness provided by presenters Raksha Dave and Alex Langlands.

“The ringing of trowels! My favourite sound in the world!” says Dave as she gets an update on progress at Silchester in Hampshire, where every summer a local team excavates a little more of the Roman town under what is now farmland but was once the capital of the Atrebates tribe.

The settlement was first uncovered by antiquarians in the 1860s but then covered up again, oddly. Now, excavations of the bathhouse are unearthing finds that don’t look all that impressive but, we’re told, mean a lot.
