Episode 2: Breaking Point

Summary

There are more new arrivals at the home, meaning Jimmy and Jenny Desmond now have 28 rescued chimpanzees to look after, including an eight-week-old baby called Gaia. Plans are coming together for the new sanctuary in the forest, and the orphans learn to master tools so they can forage for food. But a deadly cold breaks out among the babies, with disastrous consequences. The team also rescues an adult male chimp called Jonny who brings a fresh set of challenges. The pressure is on to move the chimps to their new home before things get out of hand.

Review

One of the many distressing aspects of the illegal trade in baby chimps is their consequent vulnerability to mild human illnesses. Thus a common cold can, to a tiny chimp, become a full-blown, possibly deadly, chest infection. There’s an outbreak at the sanctuary run by saintly Jimmy and Jenny Desmond and the results are devastating.

The couple are planning to open a new, much bigger sanctuary – if they can raise the funds – as the little camp is now seriously overcrowded, such are the numbers of orphaned babies whose mothers have been killed. There’s a raid on a village where a tiny chimp is in chains and an adult chimp is tethered. He’s frightened, disorientated and dangerous.
