Summary

Jay Blades and the team bring four treasured family heirlooms back to life. First to arrive at the barn are sisters Christine Hopkins and Pauline Samways from Kidderminster, who bring in a miniature bicycle built by their grandfather. Elsewhere, silversmith Brenton West takes receipt of a small mosaic crucifix with an extraordinary story, and Steve Fletcher turns his attention to an army issued box kite. Finally, antique toy enthusiast David Burville sets to work restoring a Victorian acrobat toy.

Review

A new peak-time run opens with an excellent job restoring a tiny bicycle. I mean, stupidly small – but it works, in theory. Two sisters from Kidderminster explain that their grandfather not only made the bike but used to ride it, too.

And just when you think that’s not possible, there’s a fabulous archive clip of him doing so, in the 1970s by the looks of it. Dominic sets about getting the frame sorted while Suzie works her leathery magic on the saddle.

But wait, there’s an even better story, as a woman brings in her father’s “micro-mosaic” crucifix. Fighting in the Second World War, he had the cross in his chest pocket and it stopped a bullet, so she owes her life to it, too. It’s a fascinatingly fiddly job for Kirsten, but her hands are rock steady.

And for fans of charming Will, I’m sorry to say he has nothing to fix tonight, though he does at least have a go at riding the tiny bike.
