Episode 6: Live at the Apollo

Summary

Desiree Burch hosts the show recorded before a packed house at London's Hammersmith Apollo, warming up the audience and then introducing stand-up performances by Paul McCaffrey and Jonny Pelham.

Review

The exuberant Desiree Burch opens this week’s edition with a bang, dancing onstage and greeting the crowd with a throaty roar before she gets down to brass tacks – the actual comedy, which is an entertaining mix of her life as a 40-year-old single woman, the benefits of childlessness and the odd experience of dancing to sexist hip-hop “trap” music.

It’s a confident, assured performance from Burch (whom Radio 4 fans may recognise from various panel shows), and she goes on to introduce two more great acts – self-proclaimed “Oasis Lego” man Paul McCaffrey and Jonny Pelham, who opens with a shocking gut-punch of a revelation but makes great hay from it.
