Episode 8: Unfit

Review

If there’s a theme to this episode’s story it’s cruelty. But then, that’s the recurring subject of the series as a whole: how cruelty can take over people’s hearts, even a whole society, but dressed up as something else.

Right now even June, our heroine, is acquiring a taste for seeing others suffer. The way she bawled out Serena a couple of weeks back (“You’re small, you’re cruel and you’re empty!”) was shocking and tonight she surprises Commander Lawrence with a poised takedown.

But the meat of the episode is a sort of origin story for Aunt Lydia: we see how the seeds of her particular cruelty grew and it involves, I’m sorry to say, Islands in the Stream.
