Summary

A jury of nine comedians, actors and writers come together to establish the definitive answer, based on a public vote that has given them a shortlisted top 30 to choose from. Sally Phillips, Stephen Mangan, Nina Wadia, John Thomson, Ronni Ancona, Darren Harriott, David Quantick, Boyd Hilton and Roy Hudd discuss the merits of the household comedy names, with accompanying archive clips of their finest and funniest moments and mini-biographies for each one.

Review

One of the most vexing, painful tasks to get involved in is ranking things in charts. Not because it’s not fun to remember the glories of, say, Rick Mayall or Victoria Wood, but because you’ll end up in an argument about whether Eddie Izzard or Lee Evans is a “better” comedian. I know the right answer and I’m sure you do too, but it’s possible we disagree.

Here, then, is a three-hour programme where a panel sits around having those kind of debates, assembling a top 30 chart that riled me straight away because neither Chris Morris nor Michael Palin made the cut to begin with. Absurd! But that’s partly the point, and luminaries including Roy Hudd, Stephen Mangan and Ronni Ancona do their damnedest to provoke outrage.
