Episode 1: Just Murdered - Part One

Summary

Spin-off from Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, set in the 1960s, following Miss Fisher's niece, who sets out to investigate what happened to her aunt. In the first of a two-part story, Peregrine Fisher arrives in Melbourne to collect her inheritance from her aunt, Phryne Fisher. Wanting to be part of the same Adventuresses' Club as her aunt, Peregrine decides to follow in Phryne's footsteps and solve the murder of a dead model at a bridal fashion show. Geraldine Hakewill stars.

Review

It’s 1964 and the stylish and tenacious Peregrine Fisher is paired with a suave investigator by the name of Steed for some kooky cases. Do we think the programme-makers might have seen The Avengers at some point?

Not that this is a bad thing; in fact, this sequel to the original Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries (Peregrine is Phryne’s niece) is frothy and lively fare, which despite being filled with Swinging Sixties trappings, such as the Jackie O-style pastels, doesn’t tip over into Austin Powers parody. In this opener, we see Peregrine move to mod-era Melbourne, where she soon starts sleuthing after a glamorous model is found dead on top of a wedding cake during a fashion parade.
