Episode 2: The Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up to Cancer

Summary

Comedian James Acaster, actor Russell Tovey, TV presenter Rylan Clark-Neal and actress Michelle Keegan face three baking tasks set by judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood, starting with topped flapjacks for the signature challenge and a tricky technical. They are then asked to create their `happy places' out of meringue for the showstopper challenge. Who will flap at the first hurdle and who will battle their way through to be crowned star baker? Presented by Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding.

Review

We won’t be short of opportunities to laugh at famous people raising money for charity this week. Comic Relief has a powerhouse line-up but all their celeb-packed skits will have a job topping James Acaster’s hapless turn here.

If you’re lucky enough to have seen his current stand-up show you’ll know all about how the experience of baking cream horns for Paul Hollywood marked, by his own extended, agonised account, a personal and professional low. All I can say from watching the programme is, if this is what Acaster’s like when he’s jet-lagged and in the midst of a breakdown, heaven help us when he’s on form.

Acaster isn’t the only tyro in the tent. Rylan Clark-Neal is on good form, too; and actors Michelle Keegan and Russell Tovey are determined to turn out presentable flapjacks and meringues. There’s a lot to enjoy, then a video insert telling the story of cancer patient Felicia reminds us what it’s all about.
