Episode 2: Nature's Biggest Beasts

Summary

The world's biggest beasts have always captured people's imagination. But while being big can have its advantages, it also comes with sizeable challenges. From the Komodo dragon, whose huge appetite means it must take on prey 10 times its weight, to the giraffe, whose long neck must control immense blood pressure, nature's biggest beasts must go to extraordinary lengths to thrive. This film tells just some of these survival stories. Narrated by Miles Jupp.

Review

Miles Jupp is the perfect wry narrator for a compilation of stories about titans of the animal kingdom. You can take your pick of the bio-trivia: how about the fact that a Komodo dragon has a bite that is weaker than the average housecat? Or that a blue whale’s tongue weighs as much as an elephant?

After a while the big-number facts could pall, but the film keeps delivering the wow factor… as well as the eesh factor. I would gladly have gone to my grave never having seen footage of a Kinabalu giant red leech ingesting its prey, the Bornean blue earthworm, each species over a foot long… and slimy. But stick around for a newborn hippo.
