Episode 4: The Art of Architecture

Summary

A look at Thomas Heatherwick's the Vessel at the Hudson Yards development in Manhattan, a giant honeycomb-like sculpture comprising a mile of publicly accessible walkways.

Review

In the first episode of this series, we saw how Santiago Calatrava helped transform Ground Zero in New York with his soaring, wing-like World Trade Center transport hub. London-based designer Thomas Heatherwick has also attempted to alter the New York cityscape with the Vessel: a strange mix of building and sculpture that’s at the heart of a new multi-billion-dollar development on Manhattan’s West Side.

Heatherwick says that “how a place makes you feel is its function”. There’s no real point to the Vessel, but the idealistic Heatherwick is a persuasive champion of the importance of bringing beauty and humanity to building in the public realm.
