Review

Watching First Dates’ maître d’ Fred Sirieix and chef Angela Hartnett dine in a handful of the best restaurants in Venice is absolute agony if you’re hungry, so keep a few bags of crisps to hand, just in case.

The pair embark upon a joyous odyssey through a city where every item of food must be brought in by boat and where fishing can be incredibly hard work, even if the rewards are stunning. Hartnett, whose grandmother was Italian, knows her way around and takes Sirieix (as fluent in Italian as Hartnett) to an anonymous-looking neighbourhood restaurant with just 11 tables.

But what happens in its tiny kitchen is no less than miraculous, as the chef shops for what looks good, and doesn’t decide on a menu until roughly an hour before the doors open. At the other end of the scale, Hartnett and Sirieix eat fabulous, expensive cakes on St Mark’s Square.
