Episode 2: The Big Asian Stand-Up

Summary

From the iconic City Varieties Music Hall in Leeds, Nish Kumar hosts the second of two programmes showcasing a new wave of comedic talent from the UK, as part of the BBC's Big British Asian Summer celebration of the cultural and artistic contribution of Asian Britons. Performers taking to the stage include Ahir Shah, Mawaan Rizwan, Sukh Ojla, Sunil Patel and Mark Silcox. All share an exciting and diverse voice, one that reflects the experience of the second or third generation of immigrants to the UK.

Review

Nish Kumar, host of The Mash Report and a performer who’s nudging onto the A-list of British stand-up himself, comperes the second of two showcases for his fellow British-Asian comics. On the bill tonight are the sharp, urbane and perpetually frustrated Ahir Shah, who described his own Edinburgh show this year as “about life, death and Bohemian Rhapsody… it’s funnier than that sounds”; and Mawaan Rizwan, whose dramatic performances in Next of Kin and particularly Murdered by My Father belie how wonderfully absurd and unpredictable he is on stage. Also in the line-up are Sunil Patel, Sukh Ojla and Mark Silcox.
