Episode 5: Giacometti

Summary

Fiona Bruce and art expert Philip Mould investigate the first work of sculpture featured on the show, an unusual piece called The Gazing Head, which may have been made by Alberto Giacometti in 1930s Paris. The quest to uncover the truth is complicated by the fact that the sculpture was once broken into several pieces by a cat. Last in the series.

Review

“The cat knocked it over,” is the kind of shame-faced admission we usually hear on Antiques Roadshow. In this Fake or Fortune? episode from 2018 it applies to a minimal sculpture in white plaster that might be an early work by Alberto Giacometti, best known for his slender bronze figures which, it’s worth noting, can fetch up to $140m.

So the stakes are potentially high, but that cat did some damage, and the repair done by the present owner’s grandfather was not what you’d call an invisible mend. It’s the first time Fake or Fortune? has dabbled in sculpture, but as always there are revelations, insights, wrong turns and the grim spectre of forgery: a cache of 1,300 Giacometti fakes gives Fiona Bruce pause for thought.
