Review

Not many directors have been able to skip from genre to genre with the panache of Billy Wilder. During Hollywood’s golden age, he delighted audiences with the noir thrills of Double Indemnity, the pathos of The Apartment and – for my money, at least – the best screen adaptation of an Agatha Christie mystery in courtroom drama Witness for the Prosecution. Not bad going for someone who couldn’t speak English when he arrived in America in 1934.

Osgood, at the end of Some Like It Hot, may remark that “nobody’s perfect”, but Wilder came pretty darn close, at least where his movies were concerned. And this chronological overview of his career will leave you wanting to revisit the best of that back catalogue.
