Episode 3: Albania

Summary

The comedian tests his preconceptions of Albania, guided on a whistlestop tour of the country by local TV presenter and journalist Erjona Rusi. Along the way, he tries to discover why Albania has remained a stubbornly unfashionable holiday destination, meeting those at the extremes of the country, from the rural farmers to the billionaire playboys who live in the cities in the company of supermodels.

Review

Previews weren’t available but this excellently off-beat (and off the beaten track) series has been a treat so far. Our guide’s final destination is Albania, a country that at first sight appears to have a lot going for it, from a coastline it shares with Croatia to stunning mountains.

So why has it remained a stubbornly unfashionable holiday destination while other formerly communist nations have leapt ahead? It’s certainly not the welcome: Ranganathan finds a level of hospitality he describes as “second to none”. On a whistlestop tour, he meets those at the extremes of the country, from a remote shepherds’ village to billionaire playboys.
