Review

The sixth series begins with a bit of a shock – Sherlock (Jonny Lee Miller), dressed in funereal black, lying on a mortuary slab. Did his relapse and violent outbursts in the previous series reach a terrible climax? He’s definitely not the man he used to be, and it takes a while for an angrily disappointed Joan (Lucy Liu) to get her head around his altered situation. In one surprisingly emotional scene he’s forced to be truthful to her about his fears; it’s impressive that both stars can still come up with the goods in such a long-established series.

But there’s still a murder to solve – it involves a missing sex-tape participant – and Sherlock makes a new contact at a Narcotics Anonymous meeting. But as they say, with friends like these…
