Episode 2: The Tin of Meat

Summary

When Mum's best friend, Val moves in after rowing with her husband, Dad soon finds himself driven to distraction after the visitor repeatedly tidies up the house and chucks away all his old stuff. Tensions reach boiling-point when Val finds an aged tin of meat with a `best before 1996' date that Dad has been storing in his shed. Tracy-Ann Oberman plays the unwelcome visitor in writer Robert Popper's award-winning comedy, alongside series regulars Simon Bird, Tom Rosenthal, Tamsin Greig and Paul Ritter.

Review

Much more of a classic Friday Night Dinner this week. Brothers Adam and Jonny arrive home to find their father Martin sitting shirtless and asleep in his car. He has been eating oxtail soup (also in the car) and seems upset. Clearly something bad is happening, and that something is “Auntie” Val (Tracy-Ann Oberman), their mother’s maddening friend, who has come to stay to escape another marital crisis.

From there an enjoyable farce tumbles out, with Martin outraged at Val’s attempts to throw away his clutter. Where else would you hear lines like “Have you seen my stapler collection?” and “It’s my good-luck meat!”? Does Jonny want his new boss to visit this madhouse?
