Episode 2: Emperor

Summary

David Attenborough narrates footage of emperor penguins in Atka Bay, on the coast of Antarctica, as they return from three months of feeding at sea to raise their chicks. They arrive as the sea freezes over and other animals desert the area for safer territory - but if the penguins are to nurture a future generation, they will have to work together to endure some of the harshest conditions on Earth.

Review

“Emperor penguins are beautifully designed for many things,” narrates David Attenborough, “but mating is not one of them.” And in a hilarious sequence we see what he means. But while penguins are often absurdly funny, much of this stunning doc is distressing, because the Antarctic is such a cruel place.

Chicks often freeze to death in the sub-zero winter temperatures but the sight of a tiny chick, abandoned by its mother in a deep crevasse and struggling to climb to safety, is especially heartbreaking. This species already endures terrible annual hardships including six weeks without sunlight, starvation and blizzards, but now global warming may be the death of them.
