Episode 1: Have I Got News for You

Summary

New series. Pointless co-host Alexander Armstrong takes the reins as the satirical current affairs quiz returns, with comedian and actress Roisin Conaty and broadcaster James O'Brien joining team captains Ian Hislop and Paul Merton to poke fun at the week's news.

Review

A star rating of 5 out of 5.

It hasn’t exactly been a quiet summer on the news front, so team captains Ian Hislop and Paul Merton will be keen to sharpen their satirical scythes on all sorts of subjects: looming armageddon in Korea, Brexit, Corbyn's resurgence, Theresa May’s woes and the almost hourly food bank for comics everywhere that is Donald Trump’s Twitter account. Oh yes, and Boris may get a couple of mentions.

Now in its 54th series (no typo), the BBC’s juggernaut has staying power – as does Private Eye editor Hislop, who has still not missed a single one of its nearly 500 editions (even when suffering from appendicitis). Because while the Corporation said recently that it wants to move away from the traditional panel-show format, it has committed to this one long term, which is good news for its favourite chair Alexander Armstrong, who is again in tonight’s hot seat.

Will they make series 100? Unless people in the public eye stop saying and doing stupid things, I wouldn’t bet against it.
