Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Nadiya Hussain has had the world at her feet since her Great British Bake Off win, but in her new series she stays close to home. In fact, she doesn’t stray far from her doorstep in the first episode, titled the Home Counties – except her first stop is Oxford, which isn’t in the Home Counties.

Here she visits an asparagus farm during harvest time and, in the honourable tradition of television presenters throughout the ages, Has a Go. This involves piloting a weird half-bike/half-car machine as she cuts the asparagus by hand. It looks like hard work.

With the less-than-perfect asparagus that supermarkets reject, Hussain rustles up, alfresco, an Indian five-spice vegetable stir-fry (a good tip – fry the garlic separately).

Then a retired fireman in Milton Keynes – and both he and Hussain appreciate the irony – shows her how to cold-smoke fish.
