Summary

Ackley Bridge is a Yorkshire mill town, home to largely divided white and Asian populations. Like the communities, the school systems have also become segregated. However as two formerly isolated comprehensives are merged into a brand new academy, Ackley Bridge College, the lives and cultures of each are set to collide.

Episode 2: Ackley Bridge

Summary

Jordan finds himself in charge of a baby that he has to sneak into school, but it is harder to conceal than he first anticipated, so blackmails PE teacher Steve into helping him out. Unable to return it to its mother, a stumped Steve ends up taking Jordan and the baby back to his house. Meanwhile, Missy agrees that if Cory sleeps with Nas, she will sleep with Cory. However, she soon discovers Cory has a loose tongue and that the whole school now thinks this is an open opportunity.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

“What kind of school are you running here?” an irate parent asks Ackley Bridge head teacher Mandy (Jo Joyner). We’re wondering the same at home.

We’ve already seen PE teacher Steve (Paul Nicholls) thump a pupil – now he bunks off school to babysit the lad (in more ways than one). Mandy’s flirting with the school sponsor Sadiq (Adil Ray) and English teacher Emma (Liz White) is making eyes at another staff member. Whatever lessons are being learnt at this multicultural school, they don’t feature on the national curriculum.

Meanwhile, best friends Nas and Missy have fallen out because Nas has started wearing a hijab, although not for the right reasons. Nas’s mum (a terrific performance by Sunetra Sarker) tries to help, but it’s Nas’s confession about an unexpected crush that reconciles the pair.
