Episode 6: When You Want to Show Off

Summary

Mary and her husband celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary, and she shares her secrets on how to create surprisingly easy showstoppers, including canapes inspired by the 1960s.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

There’s a sweet scene in this final episode of the series where Mary and Paul, her husband of 50 years, look back at their wedding photos and reflect on married life. It could easily become soppy, but they’re both fairly unsentimental about it – she teases him (“Bit more hair in those days…”) and they recall how he had to propose three times before she accepted.

Even so, her simple conclusion that “We’re lucky to have each other” is touching, and sets off the rest of the programme, where she’s preparing what you might call showstoppers for a celebratory meal with friends. Plus, an admission: “I have finally succumbed to a blowtorch,” says Mary guiltily, as if it were an AK-47.
