Episode 4: Roots

Summary

Remake of the 1977 dramatisation of Alex Haley's book, chronicling the saga of an African slave sold in America, and the story of his descendants. Last in the series.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Lord, but this series wrings us out like dishcloths. Its saga of one slave’s descendants in the American South is wrenchingly sad, with great tides of emotion bearing the story along. But then, occasionally, the odd shaft of sunlight pierces through and we catch our breath.

The final instalment sees Chicken George briefly reunited with his white father – and former owner – Tom Lea. “The truth is,” George tells him, “your whole damn life, you was a slave too, you just never knew it.”

How George rises above his past and redeems his family makes for a searing finale, with Regé-Jean Page again magnificent. To anyone who doubted the 70s classic was worth reimagining, this has proved them royally wrong.
