Episode 2: Roots

Summary

Ten years after being bought as a slave, Kunta Kinte escapes and is enlisted to fight for the British army, but his hopes of freedom are soon brutally crushed. Kunta goes on to marry Belle, and the pair have a daughter called Kizzy, who grows up to be a bright and defiant young woman, inheriting her father's spirit.

Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Kunta Kinte – or Toby as he must now call himself after that terrible whipping in the last episode – is still looking for ways to escape his enslavement in 1780s Virginia. Deep down, he is still a Mandinka warrior at heart.

A shot at freedom comes when he gets away from his plantation and enlists with the British Army fighting the Revolutionary War. It’s part of the power of this moving remake that however much we know the destiny of Kunta and his descendants, we keep hoping they will somehow escape it. Instead there’s a catalogue of cruelty and wrenching betrayal – but with occasional moments of love amid the pain.
