Episode 1: Shop Well for Less?

Summary

The One Show presenter Alex Jones and business journalist Steph McGovern take on a mission to help families change the way they shop without changing their lifestyles. They begin in Glasgow, where Colin and Karen Rodger dream of taking their three sets of twins abroad for the first time. However, they are big spenders, with Karen's shoe addiction rubbing off onto the children, while Colin opts for only the very best when it comes to gadgets. To help them save money, they have their branded products replaced with substitutes, and also test cheaper vacuums and washing detergents. Will they be able to change their spendthrift ways?

Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Steph McGovern and Alex Jones sandbag another hapless family with money-saving tips as this cheerful, noisy, parsimonious series returns. The Rodgers – mum and dad and three sets of twins – want to go on holiday for the first time in years.

They love to spend, not just on electronic gadgets, but also on shoes — they have more than 200 pairs costing a total of £12,000 — and branded washing liquid for their five daily machine-loads of laundry.

Jones and McGovern try replacing most of the expensive stuff with cheaper items and a tumble dryer ban (it’s used seven times a day). But some measures are more successful than others.
