Episode 5: 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown

Summary

Jimmy Carr hosts the comedy words and numbers quiz. Guest captain Richard Ayoade is joined by Rob Beckett, going up against Jon Richardson and Claudia Winkleman, with Adam Riches accompanying Susie Dent in Dictionary Corner and Rachel Riley dishing out the all-important consonants, vowels and numbers.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

If one or two guests aren’t firing, this hour-long mashup can drag. Not tonight, thanks to the first-timer in Dictionary Corner: hulking and musky in full battle dress, it’s Sean Bean! “I’m widely considered to be one of Britain’s muddiest actors” is one of the few repeatable boasts in an overwhelming performance by character comic Adam Riches. The long exchange where Jimmy Carr tries to guess which of his films “Sean” is thinking of must have been a riot to write (“Is it the one where… you eat half a wagon?”).

And taking on Jon Richardson as guest captain is Richard Ayoade, who somehow hasn’t been on this before — he’s as perfectly suited as you’d expect.
