Episode 1: 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown

Summary

Jimmy Carr hosts the hybrid panel quiz show, putting a comedy spin on Channel 4's long-running words-and-numbers game. Guest team captain David Walliams joins forces with Jonathan Ross, while Jon Richardson teams up with Joe Lycett. Isy Suttie joins Countdown's resident lexicographer Susie Dent in Dictionary Corner, and Rachel Riley takes care of the numbers and letters.

Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Jonathan Ross and Catsdown debutant David Walliams – the latter a guest captain taking the place of Sean Lock – lend this instalment of the comedy quiz a slightly different vibe. While younger, thinner comics Jon Richardson and Joe Lycett sit on the other side with their complicated props (a ouija board and a clock embedded in a photograph of Pam St Clement, respectively), the two big beasts get by on confidence and timing.

Walliams in particular has an imposingly chaotic, Will Ferrell-ish presence. Offsetting him nicely in Dictionary Corner is Isy Suttie, who has a good anecdote about the time she told her primary-school teacher that her dad was a burglar.
