Rating: 3 out of 5.

Sister Ursula’s reign of terror at Nonnatus House has serious repercussions when she insists that the midwives spend no longer than 20 minutes with each patient.

As the little band tears around the East End, cycling furiously and doing a lot of watch-checking, Barbara doesn’t have time to properly observe a new mum overly cossetted by her Chinese mother-in-law, who complains of bad headaches.

And the dead hand of bureaucracy exerts an icy grip on Dr Turner’s little maternity home when the Board of Health representative calls to do the bidding of health minister Enoch Powell, who wants maternity care centred on big general hospitals. But he faces the full force of magnificent Phyllis Crane.
