Episode 4: 24 Hours in A&E

Summary

An 84-year-old is rushed into hospital after losing control of his car and crashing into a road sign, and is in need of an emergency transfusion after his blood pressure drops dangerously low. Elsewhere, seven-year-old Reggie needs surgery to fix his broken arm, and 66-year-old Christine comes into A&E with worrying symptoms after the entire left side of her body collapses.

Review

Any other avid fans of 24 Hours in A&E and shows of its ilk consider themselves an honorary medical professional? My ego may be temporarily inflated after correctly diagnosing a patient before the doctor did on Grey’s Anatomy the other day but I’m pretty sure I’ve earned some sort of qualification by now.

I definitely know the jargon well enough to wince when hearing that one of tonight’s patients “bullseyed” his windscreen. It’s pretty self-explanatory; 84-year-old John lost control while driving, smashing his car into a road sign – and his skull into the front window.

Testing my medical skills is Christine, 66, brought in with worrying symptoms that initially suggest a stroke – but doctors soon suspect something more serious. And Reggie, seven, has an injured arm; he hurt himself while doing a cartwheel to celebrate England's win over Wales in this summer’s Euros. Diagnosis: hubris.
