Episode 4: My Mother and Other Strangers

Summary

Rose's sister Vera arrives in Moybeg for her annual visit, to the delight of the Coyne children - especially Emma, who loves having the opportunity to talk about boys with her free-spirited aunt. Vera takes a liking to Captain Dreyfuss, which forces Rose to open up about her feelings for the American officer before her sister sweeps him off his feet. The sisters invite Captain Dreyfuss to lunch, and he asks if he can bring another officer - but they are surprised to see who it is that he turns up with.

Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Rose’s brassy sister Vera turns up to bring sparkle to the grey little Northern Irish village of Moybeg. She’s a vision in vermillion lipstick, dressed top to toe in scarlet and throwing lusty looks at the Second World War US airmen.

But Vera finds succour in booze, which is unfortunate for her brother-in-law Michael, landlord of the local bar. As Vera sashays in, male eyes goggling in her direction, she is too free with the drink and it all ends in tears.

We learn that Vera is merely trying to drown a dreadful unhappiness by getting hammered and flirting with handsome Captain Dreyfuss, who as we all know by now has eyes for only Rose.

The first episode of this wartime romance won a big audience for BBC1 who doubtless are caught up in Rose and Captain Dreyfuss’s forbidden love. Here they share an uncomfortable lunch.
