Episode 1: The Moonstone

Summary

It is 1849 and adventurer Franklin Blake returns to England to try to recover a rare Indian diamond stolen from his sweetheart Rachel Verinder on her 18th birthday. Mystery based on the novel by Wilkie Collins, starring Joshua Silver, John Thomson and Terenia Edwards.

Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Considered by many to be the precursor of English country house detective mysteries, Wilkie Collins’s novel about the disappearance of a fabulous, but cursed, diamond has been adapted into a five-part series and is – excuse the pun – a little daytime gem.

All the trademarks of an Agatha Christie whodunnit are here. As well as the quintessentially English setting, there’s a dashing and charismatic adventurer (Joshua Silver), his headstrong true love (Terenia Edwards), a pious but manipulating busybody (Sarah Hadland) and a rose-loving former detective (John Thomson). The servants are suspicious, too. Part two is tomorrow.
