Episode 5: The Secret Life of the Zoo

Summary

Four Sumatran orang-utans escape from their quarters, and tempting them back inside proves easier said than done, while the dominant female meerkat faces trouble from her daughter, who is launching physical attacks upon her mother. A young Asian elephant keeps the rest of the herd entertained as they adapt to the loss of two members to a virus. The keepers believe it needs a playmate its own age, but their hopes rest on the bull elephant mating with the females once more.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Sumatran orangutans Subis, Tuti, Siska and Indah can’t be thrilled by their new quarters at Chester Zoo because they hightail it for the much more interesting environment of the Monsoon Forest roof, where they try on a fire hydrant cover and some vet’s gloves for size. The keepers know it’s going to be tricky to tempt them away from such exciting distractions.

Meanwhile, in the meerkat house, the dominant female is being physically attacked by her own daughter (unimaginatively named Number 13), while the family of Asian elephants (the Hi-Ways) are adapting to the loss of two young members of the herd to a virus.
