Episode 1: Gadgets

Summary

Craiglang's residents cannot resist the temptation of the Futuroo catalogue and the promise that its products can make life easier. However, it quickly becomes apparent its claims are misleading. As Jack and Victor spar over whose gadget is best, there's a spot of sibling rivalry between Winston and newly arrived Walter. Ford Kiernan and Greg Hemphill star.

Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Nine years after the last full series, Ford Kiernan and Greg Hemphill’s ever-grey Glasgow pensioners are back. A bit of tight-fistedness from Victor (Hemphill) kicks off this week’s caper: instead of buying two newspapers, he gets one to share, so Jack (Kiernan) looks at the little catalogue full of innovative gadgets that falls out of it. Before long, Isa (Jane McCarry) has a ceramic dog to answer the door for her, Eric (James Martin) is wearing a heated cap, and Jack himself has the ultimate bath caddy.

Meanwhile, Winston (Paul Riley) has a visit from his almost identical but more charming long-lost brother, Walter (Gary Miller). Sitcom purists might say both plot strands resolve themselves half-heartedly, but it’s good to have the gang back.
