Episode 1: Safari Babies

Summary

Documentary following young animals growing up in some of the harshest environments on the planet, beginning in Africa, where large herds all compete for the same food. A newborn elephant calf and its mother become separated from the rest of their family, six cheetah cubs are chased from a kill by vultures and a zebra foal has to cross the treacherous waters of a crocodile-infested river.

Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

This is such an “aw”-some hour, in that you’ll spend the whole time going “aw, look at the cute little (insert name of animal here)”.

Like the wee baby elephant on the African savannah, who with its mum has become separated from the herd. She wibbles and wobbles on jelly-legs, tumbling into a muddy pond and scrabbling adorably to get upright again.

And – heart in the mouth time – watch the weeny zebra foal with her spindly little legs, who has to belt across a treacherous river avoiding the teeth of crocodiles. When she scrabbles to find purchase on the rocky bank, you’ll be cheering her on.

Then there are the cheetah cubs, taught to kill with ruthless efficiency.
