Episode 1: Travel Man: 48 Hours in St Petersburg

Summary

Richard Ayoade returns to offer more offbeat advice on mini-breaks, with this edition seeing him spending two days in the Russian city of St Petersburg in the company of comedian Rob Beckett. Together they embark on an itinerary that includes an armoured tank, caviar, vodka, ice, culture and a herring in a fur coat, and also go to a retro communist-era apartment popular with the hipster crowd.

Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Richard Ayoade returns with his antidote to travel shows. We know his dry, offbeat approach now and it works like a treat to undercut the sort of reverential hype you’re liable to read in travel guides and weekend supplements. That’s not his way.

Instead he spends a weekend in the company of a fellow comedian and together they combine gentle mockery with enjoying the more bizarre treats a city has to offer.

In this programme he visits St Petersburg with Rob Beckett. Together they embark on a fast and funny post-Soviet itinerary that includes sightseeing from a tank, fish eggs, a vodka sommelier, ice skating, great art and a herring in a fur coat.
