Episode 5: The X Factor

Summary

Sharon Osbourne, Nicole Scherzinger, Louis Walsh and Simon Cowell gather for the penultimate round of room auditions. Naturally, by this stage in the process, the judges have already filled most of the places in the Boot Camp, but time remains for a few stand-out stars to progress to the next round. Among those already through are Honey G, a would-be rap star and `genuine urban artist', 19-year-old singer-songwriter Christian Burrows, whose tribute to his late brother reduced certain judges to tears, and 18-year-old Edinburgh student Caitlin Vanbeck, who auditioned for the show last year, but didn't make it.

Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

It may not be getting “four big fat yesses” from its audience but the general feeling is that X Factor is back on form.

The judges have real chemistry with each other (although Nicole Scherzinger is outdoing herself with her nonsensical Scherzy-isms), and swapping the auditions from arena to a more intimate space has gone down well. Plus the lovely Dermot O’Leary is back, softening blows and celebrating successes with his easy charm.

Yet viewing figures for the opening weekend were on a par with those of 2006 (around four million down from its glory days). Is this simply the result of people watching on catch-up, or something else?
