Episode 22: Ightham Mote 2

Summary

Fiona Bruce presents a second show from Ightham Mote near Sevenoaks, where finds include a gold ring containing a lock of Lord Byron's hair, a collection of postcards from 1916 that reveal how a British PoW sent messages to his family, and a pair of Chinese paintings that make a big impression on specialist David Battie.

Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Back to Ightham Mote in Kent where two friends from the same village discovered they had almost identical paintings hanging on their walls – but surprisingly one is worth considerably more than the other.

Among the other treasures being valued are Soviet New Year tree decorations, a collection of 19th-century line drawings of Samoa and a piece of mourning jewellery – a ring containing a lock of Lord Byron’s hair brought in by an extremely knowledgeable youngster.

However, the most exciting items – for expert David Battie anyway – are two Chinese paintings that were bought in a car-boot sale but have been tucked away in the owner’s loft ever since.
