Episode 23: New Lanark 1

Summary

Fiona Bruce presents the show from an 18th-century cotton mill on the banks of the River Clyde. Among the items brought in to be valued are a pearl necklace bought cheaply at a car boot sale, a rare cuddly toy found in a skip, and a valuable clock. One guest brings in a painting that is a reminder of an uncomfortable family secret.

Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

All Antiques Roadshow viewers love it when items bought for pennies or found in a rubbish bin turn out to be heart-stoppingly valuable or rare. At New Lanark in Lanarkshire there are several such treasures, proving you should think twice before throwing anything out.

There’s a travelling clock bought very cheaply at a German flea market, a 1930s toy bee rescued from a skip, and a pair of ornately carved chairs that had been relegated to the garage for years. The best reaction to a valuation comes from the owner of a large piece of furniture: “Oh my goodness. Oh no!” he gasps, clearly alarmed about how casually he’s been using it.
